Minister of Economy and Planning stresses that the merchandise sales in foreign currencies are a favorable initiative for the country

Alejandro Gil Fernandez, deputy prime minister and head of Economy and Planning, said at the Round Table of the Cuban television that the new measures for the merchandise sales in the foreign currency stores have had a favorable behavior.

During the said television program, and in the presence of Salvador Valdes Mesa, Vice-President of the Republic, the minister declared that the purposes of these measures have been fulfilled, and the main indicator of their effectiveness is the demand that has been presented.

This is an initiative that benefits the entire people, regardless of the fact that not everyone can buy the products in the stores, but the currencies that are being captured with this activity contribute to the social system of the nation, and to the population in general.

In general, he said, the measure proves its worth although work must still be carried out for its improvement, and the duty to impose ourselves on the current scenario is paramount.

Gil Fernandez said that the first steps are being taken for the participation of the national industry as suppliers in this commercialization, which will make it possible to maintain an adequate level of supply.

He recalled that this step is part of a group of measures to boost the development of the country's economy, a gradual, permanent and continuous process, always in the monitoring phase.

Several objectives are pursued with it, such as having a medium and high-end product offer level; capturing foreign currencies for the economic and social development of Cuba and creating a mechanism for the participation of the national industry.

Since October 28th, 2019, the commercialization of household appliances, parts and pieces of cars, and other supplies began on the archipelago through magnetic cards backed by foreign currencies, the experience began in Havana and Santiago de Cuba and it has spread throughout the country.
