Evocation of Eusebio

Evocation of Eusebio

When the people of Havana, on behalf of all Cuba, pay homage to Eusebio Leal Spengler, the eternal Historian of Havana, before his ashes, exhibited at the Hall of the Lost Steps of the National Capitol, the hearts of Cubans will be vibrating for that good man, who was very Cuban, so ours, who did so much and continues to do so much from immortality for his homeland and for the national culture.

Eusebio is reborn in every piece of the island where our traditions, our history, and our identity are preserved. In Villa Clara he is remembered when the Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas awarded him the well-deserved Honorary Doctorate in History, on November 13th, 2012, when he said that honors are neither requested nor rejected. He humbly appreciated his inscription in the institution's Honorary Doctorate registry, which he claimed honored him too much with this high distinction, in his own words.

The daughters and sons of Remedios also do not forget his presence during the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Eighth Cuban Villa, in 2015, when she spoke with passion of the need to safeguard the heritage of that beautiful land for the future or when he referred to the imperishable legacy of the lawyer and genius local musician Alejandro Garcia Caturla, whom he referred to as eternal, and with a beautiful metaphor he pointed out that at any moment Caturla's piano would be heard resounding in that square.

Thus, in the same way he honored Caturla, at this large and beautiful square that is Cuba, when Eusebio´s ashes are deposited forever at the Convent of San Francisco de Asis, his voice will still resound to light the way in the construction of our Cuban and in the defense of this country that he loved so much as one of his most prodigal sons.
