Raul Castro sends congratulations to Viengsay Valdes

Viengsay Valdes received on Wednesday, a congratulatory letter sent by Army General Raul Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, on the occasion of the official designation of the said outstanding dancer as director of the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC).

In the letter, which was delivered by Fernando Rojas, vice-minister of Culture, at an event also attended by Luis Morlote, president of the UNEAC, Raul Castro states: may receive my most sincere congratulations on your appointment as general director of the National Ballet of Cuba, the prestigious company that, thanks to the always dear Alicia Alonso, has been the pride of our people.

That responsibility, which you have earned on your talent, effort, discipline and prestige, should continue the legacy of the Cuban ballet school and the cultural work of the Revolution, it adds.

The election of Viengsay was announced on January 1st by Alpidio Alonso Grau, Minister of Culture, who, on that occasion, labeled her as one of the greatest dancers in the history of the ensemble, and probably the most outstanding disciple of Alicia Alonso.

The delivery of the letter occurred on the same day that the general director of the BNC gave the conference about ballet in Cuba, an art with its own identity, at the Aula Magna of the University of Havana.
