Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos called on the United States to lift the five-decade-old economic, financial and commercial blockade on Cuba. Speaking at a cocktail party to mark the 7th anniversary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA), organized in Madrid by the embassies of the eight member countries of the bloc, Santos described the U.S. unilateral sanction as anachronistic.

After 20 UN resolutions, which were overwhelmingly in favor of lifting the blockade, it is time for President Barack Obama to end this unjust situation, the Nicaraguan foreign minister emphasized.

The head of Nicaraguan diplomacy gave the closing speech at the reception, hosted by the ambassadors from Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Venezuela, the ALBA member countries represented in Spain.

Speaking before about 500 guests who attended the commemoration, Santos also referred to the meeting held on Wednesday in Havana by senior representatives of that integration mechanism created in 2004 at the initiative of Cuba and Venezuela.
