The President of the Cuban National Writers and Artists Association -UNEAC-, Miguel Barnet, has announced the official declaration of “rumba” as cultural heritage of the Cuban nation. At the organization’s Havana headquarters, along with collaborators, researchers and cultivators of the genre, the renowned Cuban intellectual highlighted how proud all Cubans should be with the declaration wherever they might be.

No musical singing or dancing genre had so far received that category; however, three string instruments derived from the guitar have been declared part of the island’s cultural heritage.

For her part, the President  of the National Cultural Heritage Council, Gladys Collazo, assured that the National Intangible Heritage Commission has been working very hard on safeguarding those forms thanks to Miguel Barnet.

Cuba has requested the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization –UNESCO- to include various traditional and popular cultural forms, such as cigar factory reading and “repentismo” (improvised poem reciting) on that list. It will also ask the organization to include “rumba”.
