Cuba: A Country of High Human Development

Despite suffering an inhumane, economic, commercial and financial blockade for nearly half a century, Cuba ranks as country with high human development, thanks to the constant concern of Cuban authorities for the welfare status of its population.

The report of the 2011 Human Development Index recognizes Cuba as the country that has advanced the most in recent years in this world ranking. Thus, it climbed 10 positions in the last 6 years, which tops the list of the 72 nations that achieved breakthroughs during this time.

Cuba is ranked 51st among 187 countries surveyed and improved 2 positions globally, while in Latin America the results are only surpassed by Chile, Argentina, Barbados and Uruguay.

The reality is that Cuba currently holds health and education levels that put it on par with developed countries. The free and universal access for all Cubans to medical services has made a life expectancy of 79 years old possible.

The systematic vaccination campaigns carried out in the country after the revolutionary triumph of January 1959 have enabled the country to eradicate various deadly diseases such as polio, and assure that others do not constitute serious health problems.

The decrease of infant mortality rate, which last year, for instance, recorded a rate of 4.5 per thousand live births, the lowest in its history, also demonstrates these achievements.

In addition, thanks to government efforts to improve nutrition, especially in the most vulnerable sectors, Cuba is the only country in Latin America and the Caribbean that has eliminated childhood malnutrition.

On this issue, FAO, United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture, has also recognized the island as the Latin-American nation that has advanced the most in the fight against malnutrition.

Parallel, in education, which is free for all Cubans, achievements are also significant. Since 1961, when illiteracy was eliminated, valuable transformations have been experienced in this important area. Currently, the average education level is 10th grade in the general population and even higher among youth.

The progresses made by Cuba in many areas are evidence of the policies of the Revolution to improve the living standards of all Cubans, who are protected and guaranteed their basic human rights starting at birth.
